The North Hollywood shootout was an armed confrontation between two heavily-armed and armored bank robbers, Larry Eugene Phillips, Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, and patrol and SWAT officers of the Los Angeles Police Department in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on February 28, 1997.
Both robbers fired fully automatics weapons with armor-piercing bullets able to penetrate walls and cars. They wore body armor and even metal plates to protect their vital organs.
Both received many bullet hits but their body armor protected them from most of the shots. In all they fired over 1,300 rounds.
Philips was eventually gunned down by SWAT teams and Matasareanu bled to death after being hit many times in the legs.
In typical fashion the family of Matasareanu filed a lawsuit against members of the LAPD claiming his civil rights were violated and that he was allowed to bleed to death.
The suit was eventually dropped by the Matasareanu's family.
All in all it was a pretty Phucked Up situation!
